Creating High Performance Teams

I have frequently met with leaders of teams who comment that they want to get their teams to the next level of performance. It’s not that the team is under performing, it’s more about the leader feeling that the team could achieve more.

When I start to dig a bit deeper, especially after talking with team members, familiar comments start to emerge:

  • Battles within the team itself – people feeling that the team is split by cliques
  • Team members feeling isolated by geography
  • Lack of recognition – consistent hard work and delivery – no celebration or thanks
  • Who are we – no sense of what the team stands for or any real identity
  • Lack of direction – yes, we know what we are doing today but where is this taking us and why…
  • Lack of feedback – sense of operating in a vacuum, how am I doing, what did I do well, where can I improve…
  • No sense of team – dispensable cog in the machine rather than a person appreciated by fellow team members and the leader
